In the first month since Illinois’s opened its medical marijuana dispensaries on November 9, 2015, 1,713 patients visited the dispensaries and spent $800,000 on marijuana. The State currently has 3,600 patients in its MMJ program. Medical marijuana has an average cost of $14 to $15 per gram in Illinois and wholesalers pay a 7% tax to the state on all sales.

It was announced that from legal medical marijuana sales, the state has generated $56,550 in tax dollars during the first month. It is expected that more tax dollars will become available to the State with the increasing numbers of qualified and approved patients.

The number of licensed dispensaries shall corollary grow to meet the requirements of patients enrolled in the medical marijuana program.
